Gymnastics

Last night at gymnastics Ava was invited to join a precompetitive team. While this is super exciting and flattering, I'm not so sure if we should let her join or not.

Currently Ava goes to gym one hour, once a week. We've been extremely pleased with the gym and even recently signed Maddux up for a class (it meets the same time as Ava's class so it worked out too perfectly to not do it). Anyway... the pre-comp team would more than double her time at the gym. It would be Tues and Thurs from 5:30-7. Currently Ava is headed upstairs to get ready for bed at 7:30 and is sleeping by 8. Being at the gym for 3 hours a week rather than 1 also doubles our costs per month.

I think Ava would love it, and I think it would be a great opportunity for her. I'm just concerned with time. While this year I think it wouldn't be too much trouble, as she would progress so would her hours at the gym. For instance after a year she'd likely progress to pre-comp team 3 and they're at the gym 5 hours a week! And it keeps going up from there. I'm just afraid that if we get her into it now we'll be burdened by it later.

I dont' know... still got some thinking to do I guess.

i struggle with this too amy. i am digging my feet in about "extracurricular" activities because i just think our kids are way to overscheduled these days. on the other hand, how do you say no if it's something your child LOVES!! ava could be an olympian one day. i think my rule is going to be that you can try things out and if you don't LOVE it, you move on to trying something else. that way you don't end up doing 1 activities per week.

well, you didn't ask for me to write a book. can you tell i've thought a lot about this. good luck with your decision.

i meant you don't end up doing 15 activities per week... not 1!

Yeah, that's tough. We made Emily step back from ALL extracurricular activities when school started b/c I just didn't think any of us could handle it. I'm thinking we may give soccer a try again in the spring. Maybe. It's hard to know what everyone can handle until you're really into it, and by then you may be too invested to get out!
