Geocaching

We've taken up geocaching! This is something we've wanted to do for awhile now, but wanted to wait until the kids were able to enjoy it as well. After a recent article on geocaching in Charlotte Parent we decided to start. We are now hooked! The kids look forward to going "treasure hunting" and we're having tons of fun despite ending up soaking with sweat and covered in bug bites. So far we've managed to not get poison ivy, but I'm sure it's in our geocaching future. :)

Just today we found 4 caches, 3 in Tega Cay and one near the York County Humane Society. The kids treasure picks were a small frisbee, a porcelain koala figurine, a ring, and a ballerina toy. Picking out a treasure is definitely their favorite part of the whole process.

For those who might not know what geocaching is... you use a handheld GPS device to hunt down and find caches that are well-hidden. www.geocaching.com has lists of caches, there are over a thousand just in Charlotte! When you find a cache you sign a log-book, take a treasure and leave a replacement treasure. Then you log onto geocaching.com and log your finds to keep a record. Anyway, it's tons of fun and quite addictive!

And on a geocaching note... Maddux drew his first "real" picture today. Normally he just draws a bunch of scribble-scrabble and calls it something. But today he drew people (his first ever!) and a fairly complex picture that was obviously something. When I asked him to tell me about it, he had drawn a picture of us trying to find a cache down by the dam (which we didn't find because where it's hidden is way to steep and rocky for the kids).

The green person is me, and the little blue person is Maddux. The pink line with dots is the cable-wire fence we stepped over. The green circles at the top is a cat that we saw wandering around (Maddux is obsessed with cats). The blue and green scribble-scrabble is thunderstorms according to Maddux even though there weren't any today. I think all the storms we've had in the last week or so has made an impression on him.

Anyway, I just had to share the picture because I just absolutely love it! :)

You're right- it IS addictive! All I need now is a baby backpak, Alex is too heavy for the Bjorn.
