I realized that I never posted anything about the kids starting back to school. I've been quite a blog slacker lately!
Ava started first grade at our brand new elementary school on Aug 25th. She was pretty excited. They didn't get to have any open house or anything before the first day so it was our first time to see the inside of the school. She got a little bit nervous when it was time to actually be in class. There is not a one classmate from last year in her class this year. That has proven to be a bit hard for Ava. Every day she would come home from school saying that she played at recess with kids from her class last year. I had to encourage her to also play with kids from her class this year. Since then she has started playing with a couple girls from her class and she seems a bit happier about things now.
Her teacher seems really on-the-ball this year. Last year we had an super teacher, but she wasn't the most organized and I can have troubles with that. ;) They've done some assessments and Ava is, as we expected, performing quite above grade level. They have yet to do the Star reading test which will give us her reading level. Ava has said a few times that things are "too easy", but I had a great conference with her teacher last week about that. As soon as all the assessments are complete she'll be creating groups within the class and doling out more individualized assignments. I'm a bit disappointed with it taking a month to finish assessments, but I guess that's just how it goes sometimes. Her teacher is disappointed with it too, so at least it's not just me. I'm confident that we'll have a really good year and I'm very pleased with all our new school has to offer so far.
Maddux started the 4 day 4's at preschool this year. He had a couple weeks to wait after Ava starting, in which I heard almost every day "is it my day to go to school?" Obviously he was excited and ready-to-go! I think it helped that he has the same teachers that Ava had for her 4's year, they're somewhat familiar to him. Last year he cried for almost the first whole month of school so I was curious to how he'd actually do. He quite impressed me when he just bopped right into class, found his backpack hook and then joined the kids for playtime. He has a good many kids in his class from last year so there's lot of familiar faces. He has had a really good time and he's already learning!
All summer long I've been tryign to get him to write his name and he just wouldn't do it. I could get him to do an M and the X, and he's sometime do the A, but the D's and the U he would never do. And what does the little stink do on his very first day of preschool? Yep, he wrote his name. Little booger.
Well, I'm off to go pick up Ava from school now. I'm very happy the school year has begun!
